Assessment

The first thing to consider about assessing media is that the focus should be on critical thinking and questioning rather than the 'answers'.
Use the key concepts to guide your assessment and consider the following three areas:

  • the student's understanding of the key concepts
  • the student's ability to to analyze and question media texts
  • the student's ability to produce media texts using appropriate techniques and conventions
To create an objective assessment guide, ask questions that will guide your evaluations of students' contributions and work.  What do you want your students to be able to do?  What will this look like?

Success criteria should be constructed with student input and then used to guide assessment by turning it into a rubric and/or checklist.

Feedback should be given frequently in order for students to have the opportunity to reflect upon their learning and improve.
